Freelance jobs have come to the front as a result of the current economic climate. The number of people who are employed has seen a huge fall in most countries and this has led to a growth in the size of the labor black market and in the freelance market. The labor black market will always be with us. Most of us know at least one person who 'moon-lights', having two jobs. One job will be his declared and taxable, the other will be the one that the tax man does not know about and which pays him cash in hand with no questions asked.

How are freelance jobs defined?

When a company needs work done but doesn't want to rely on full time employees, they often hire a freelancer who they can either train or who already has some skills and knowledge about the type of work that needs done. When working as a freelancer many people also refer to this as being self employed. While the title self employed doesn't sound as glorious as freelancer they mean basically the same thing.

Job security and a steady paycheck are often reasons why people never considered seeking out a freelance job or becoming self employed. As the past few months have demonstrated, a steady paycheck and job security are merely illusions and can vanish quickly and unexpectedly.

Many others may have never sought out doing freelance jobs because they may have feared the types of jobs they would be qualified or interested in doing would be too competitive and they wouldn't be able to get work. Now that more and more freelance job opportunities are springing up this concern almost becomes insignificant.

When it comes to bad economic times and companies only the strongest and the smartest survive. To ensure survival most companies will eliminate costs, often one of their biggest costs is their payroll. This means that companies have to cut the jobs of those who don't directly contribute to the profitably of the company in a major way.

It's no secret that even before the economic downturn; many companies were already starting to outsource some of their jobs, especially customer service phone support, to places where labor costs are more economical than in their native country. The landscape of opportunities for freelance work has changed dramatically.

There are great opportunities available now that were not there even six months ago. Companies still need gardeners, maintenance men, delivery men, advertising copy writers and, even, order packers, security guards, fulfillment operators and a wide range of other staff members, but they don't need them full time. They can use freelancers to perform these duties on an 'as required' basis saving most of the costs associated with their payroll.

Where can you locate freelance jobs?

Agencies, commonly known as 'temporary staff agencies,' can assist you with finding freelance jobs. These agencies will explore with you your knowledge, skills, and abilities. They will then be able to match you up with people willing to hire you based on your particular skill set. This is the simplest way for an inexperienced person to find a freelance job. However, once you go through the process you'll be able to successfully find freelance jobs by yourself. By doing so, you will be able to negotiate employment on your own terms. You will then be able to triumphantly proclaim you are self employed, or a freelancer, if you prefer that term better
